PHOBIA

The Adelaide Festival Centre's "inspace" program in association with Chamber Made Opera presents Phobia for four nights only.

Inspired by the thriller "Vertigo", Hitchcock's tantalising film of feigned madness, love and deception, "Phobia" takes the audience into the beguiling world of film noir via an unusual performance hybrid of music-theatre and performance art.

Award winning composer Gerry Brophy combines musical originality with a flair for the theatrical in this genre-defying production. "Phobia" employs a cast of multi-talented music/movement/stage performers well known for crossing generic boundaries; members of Fringe and Adelaide Cabaret Festival Award winning "The Ennio Morricone Experience" - Boris Conley, Patrick Cronin, David Hewitt and Graeme Leak and physical theatre duo desoxy - Teresa Blake and Dan Witton.

Devised and written by Chamber Made's artistic director, Douglas Horton, "Phobia" is a unique and inspiring example of his very original approach to theatre. It will be a night of surprises, some extraordinary feats of physicality, humour and a truly original approach to the making of sound.

"Phobia's cast of six is exceptional…genuinely multi-talented, combining high levels of skill in performing music, physical theatre and staging - often switching roles and sexes, and playing multiple instruments". The Australian

Years later, Rhona's remains are found along with those of six other little girls. Fifteen years after that, Ralph is in prison for the murders with no hope of parole. He is interviewed by Agnetha, a psychologist from America studying the minds of serial killers. She believes people like Ralph are sick, not evil. With a desire for revenge and a need to forgive, Nancy decides to meet her daughter's killer face to face. The fallout is explosive.

THE DAYLIGHT ATHEIST

STARRING Max Cullen
DIRECTOR Adam Cook
DESIGNER Dean Hills
LIGHTING DESIGNER Gavan Swift

"Arguably the best theatre you'll see all year…" Sunday Star Times, NZ
"His gift for the blarney, ironic exaggeration and colourful description makes him a wonderfully entertaining subject…" The Age

Dan Moffat sits in his crumbling room and, in a booze-induced haze, fills the space with words. He broods over his life - a childhood in Northern Ireland, his migration to New Zealand, his service in the war, his work in the shipping industry, his marriage and his fraught relationships with his children and colleagues. A neglectful husband, an appalling father, a mean piece of work capable of the most gentle generosity, Dan is above all a story teller who is only too aware of the poignancy of his own life. At times hilarious, at times gut-wrenchingly sad. Inspired by the bombast and frailties of his father, Tom Scott's melancholy-comic monologue is a wonderful performance piece for the much-loved Max Cullen.

Performance Dates:
September 9 - October 1

Venue:
The Space
Adelaide Festival Centre
